Papers, 1863-1911.

The collection includes miscellaneous papers of a business and legal nature dating primarily from the early 1900s; correspondence (1896- 1910); and a ms. grade notebook (1863-1874). There are also two copies of a privately published account (1911), written by Johnston, of two women's experiences during the Civil War, as well as financial records and several letters regarding the Oberlin Village Improvement Society.

Adelia Antoinette Field Johnston was born in Lafayett, Ohio on February 5, 1837. At age 13, in 1851, she entered the Preparatory Department of Oberlin College. She graduated from the Literary Course in 1856, and during the two years following was principal of a seminary at Mossy Grove, Tennessee. She married Oberlin classmate James M.
